How far is too far when it comes to costumes in school on the festive celebration that is Halloween? Between blood and gore, creepy masks, and skimpy outfits, where do we draw the line? Students are encouraged to stay within school dress code guidelines on Halloween. This exempts the dripping fake red blood some choose to sport on the holiday and masks, as they cover the faces of students. However, in most cases, schools must deal with the short, tight, or general lack of clothing that many students choose to sport which are ultimately seen as too suggestive and revealing. Halloween is not seen as an excuse to wear something that would be a dress code violation any other day. In Madison High School, students who violate the dress code can be forced to change their clothes along with receiving a warning the first offense, a Central Detention the second, and a Saturday detention upon the third offense.
Rather than attempt to narrowly adhere to the dress code this Friday, opt for more school-appropriate costumes (at least while in school). Instead of being a basic black cat with short shorts and cat ears, join with friends and dress as the cast from your favorite TV show or movie. If solo costumes are more your thing, be a witch (not a sexy witch) and rock that pointy hat. There are a multitude of alternative Halloween costumes for students to wear to school that do not involve being dress coded. Happy Halloween!
