The Dodger football team will play Butler High School on Saturday at 1 pm at home at Ted Monica Stadium. The squad is 1-1 so far, heading into this matchup with a win last week at Lenape Valley and a loss at Mountain Lakes the week before. If you’re just getting back into football this season, here are a few quick things to know for Saturday:
- Joe Mobley is a stud.
The junior running back was able to score touchdowns on both offense and defense last week; running in an impressive 87-yard interception return and another touchdown in the fourth quarter for 5 yards. Keep an eye on #2.
- Mobley isn’t alone.
In an interesting offensive scheme, the Dodgers have placed an extra running back on the field this year: one on each side of the quarterback.Fellow junior Zach Shupe accompanies Mobley rushing on the ground. Shupe is quick, shifty, and comparable to Mobley in size. With a monster in the form of Dom Luppino at fullback blocking to create room for each of them, our ground game should be fun to watch.
- Our quarterback can run too.
AJ Schmitz, a Quinnipiac University commit for lacrosse, is a well rounded athlete. As quarterback, he brings a lot to the table. He can throw, but his strength is in the rushing game. When the pocket breaks down, Schmitz isn’t afraid to take the ball himself and score a touchdown (like he did at Mountain Lakes for 25 yards). A former running back and often one of the bigger kids on the field, the senior is more than capable and willing to gain yards for his team.
- David Luttinger has made a smooth transition to tight end.
Luttinger, Madison’s leader in yards and points last year, has moved from fullback to tight end. Though the sizable senior captain had a successful year on the ground last season, Madison’s coaching staff made the decision that he was going to be more useful with his hands in the air this fall. Luttinger was able to pull in a 20 yard touch down pass at Mountain Lakes.
- #7 has wheels.
Wide receiver Mike Dalena had two touch downs last week at Lenape Valley. From all sources, the junior has the best hands on the team. His speed and cut-ability help him with punt returns as well. Look for #7 to catch eyes on Saturday.
