Receiving 119 of the possible 125 first-place votes, Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder was elected as the most valuable player of the NBA, but it was more than just his talent for the game that made his acceptance so memorable. Durant averages an impressive 32 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists this season. He has gained even more fans from his heartfelt tribute to his mother, Wanda Durant, during his acceptance speech.
Durant recounted stories of the sacrifices made by Mrs. Durant during his childhood. Mrs. Durant, a single mother, worked as a postal mail handler and worked tirelessly with the hopes that her sons would be able to be successful. In a particularly emotional part of the speech, Durant spoke of the nights his mother wouldn’t eat so that her two sons would be able to.
Durant then told of his frustration in high school when it was unclear whether or not he would be successful as a basketball player. He thanked his mother for keeping him off the street and motivated to follow his dreams.
Durant’s gratitude was touching and sincere. Durant has proven himself not only as an impressive player but as an impressive man.
