Madison’s spring sports season begins today, March 7th, but with every single practice field practicallyiced over with at least 6 inches of snow, coaches have been forced to get creative.
“We had to drive out to the MRC (Madison Recreational Complex) back fields and literally bash in the ice with shovels to get the nets,” comments Senior lacrosse player Sean Casey. “Practice is going to be carried out in the parking lots for most teams.”
The Dodger visited Athletic Director Sean Dowling to find out more information.
“The game plan right now is to wait it out,” says Madison’s long time AD and assistant football coach. “We can’t risk damaging the turf on Ted Monica (Stadium) in deep snow.”
As for the Madison Recreational Complex turf fields, “We have no jurisdiction there because it belongs to the borough.” explains Dowling. “We have both gyms open plus MRC, Bayley Ellard, and possibly the pool parking lots as other options for practice locations.”
“It’ll be good conditioning for the kids to run safely around to these places for practice,” he adds. “Bottom line, we’re not going to lose a state championship over having a few snowy fields at the beginning of the season.”
