Last year, Teri Minogue was putting up artwork in the display case when Madison High School janitor, Willy Gaskins, stopped to admire her work. Mr. Gaskins has worked as a janitor for about 20 years in the Madison school system and loves his job. He says he “loves working with people who I love and who treat me well.”
Nonchalantly, Mr. Gaskins requested that she draw him sometime, and then went on his merry way. Although Mr. Gaskins most likely forgot about his request, Teri did not. This fall, she obtained a photo of Mr. Gaskins from 1980 when he was stationed in Korea for a year and a half. The image shows him in a field filling up aircrafts with gas.
Teri decided to make him a thoughtful gift. She spent a month drawing the charcoal picture of Willy crouched down in his army uniform.
When she finished, Teri coordinated the unveiling as a surprise. Mr. Gaskins was called down to the art room to fix something and was surprised with Teri’s amazing work of art. He responded with a high five, a hug, and exclaimed “My buddy!” Mr. Gaskins says, “The picture was beautiful,” and is working on finding a frame to fit the drawing. This heartfelt gesture was a genuine display of simple kindness and the Madison Dodger Online gives Teri a round of applause.
