Madison High School’s Physical Education department is implementing a new program for the freshman, to be known as “Fitness Friday.” The idea behind “Fitness Friday” is to get students aware of the basic elements of a healthy lifestyle. Lynott and his fellow PE teachers are trying to steer students away from the typical “Ugh, I hope we don’t have to run the mile” sentiment that is heard so often in the locker room and get students to the point where they can do the basic fitness movements with ease. Nowadays, kids are living in a time of electronic everything, glued to their cell phones, their video games, and more. In the hallways all one can hear is what’s trending on twitter, who posted what on Instagram, etc. Kids’ physical awareness is declining and declining fast. Physical Education teachers are finding that some of their students are unable to do the basic push-up, sit-up, or even a jumping jack. Unfortunately, teen obesity is now overwhelming our nation, and the gym teachers are making the reversal of this epidemic their personal responsibility, taking on this new program as a step in the right direction. “Fitness Friday” is a new program designed to teach these students now, allow them to continue keeping fit in the future, to be more aware of their basic physical health and physical activities that will allow MHS students to be fit for life.
