What do teachers do outside of school? One may imagine a teacher sitting at home grading papers and waiting for the next school day, but teachers have lives equally as interesting as their students’.
If students are wondering where their teachers spend time while not in school, a great deal of them named the beach as their favorite place to go; this is something teachers seem to have in common with their students. Seeing as the snow and cold are making it awfully hard to enjoy the beach, Shanghai Jazz may be the next best place to find teachers since it is the favorite restaurant of both Mrs. Turvey and Mr. Oswin. If students go to the Milbrook Barn, they may encounter Mr. Fennel feeding the ducks on the lake there with his family. While passing 54 Main in Madison students may catch a glimpse of Mrs. Vilarino eating inside.
So now we know where teachers go, but what do they do? Some have collections, like Mr. Oswin’s impressive assortment of minerals and fossils. Others, like Mrs. Vilarino, run a lot. She has completed a marathon and multiple half-marathons. Anyone who has had Mr. Fisher knows that he likes to watch Nascar but he also likes to travel through the USA while visiting historical sites, maintain his whopping 6.5 sheds, or study the skies for the arrival of intergalactic guests. Others, like Mrs. Reilly, enjoy listening to music, going to movies, and watching television shows, as many students like to do.
The most common response for what teachers love doing during free time is spending time with their children and animals. Whether it is Mr. Maseker or Mr. Fennell coaching and watching their kids play sports, Mrs. O’Connor seeing her granddaughter, or Mrs. Wahle going on walks with her son and dog after spending time at dog shelters, teachers love spending time with kids. This shows their love of children that probably helped them choose the teaching profession.

But what does Mrs. Bergen do outside of school? That’s the real question.
