Glyphs Gets Gold

Glyphs, Madison High School’s literary magazine, went for the gold. After being evaluated by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Glyphs scored 940 points out of a possible 1,000, garnering both a Gold Medal and All Columbian Honors. As part of this annual written evaluation done independently each year, the literary magazine was judged by a member of the Press Associations Board, who also advises his or her own student publication. Mitigating the discrepancies between various advisers, each judge must follow common criteria and instructions. After all that, Glyphs has managed to “capture the fullness of human emotion and captivate the mind,” cementing its place as one of the “ideal student publications” that the Columbia Scholastic Press Association was looking for.

Once the judging is through, each literary magazine receives a written critique in each category: Essentials, Verbal, Prose, and Visual. Glyphs received few criticisms, racking up compliments for its “intriguing cover design,” “effective graphic repeat,” and “wonderful introduction” in the Essentials section alone. Glyphs was also praised for its editing, word choices, effective organization, and its writers’ distinctive styles in addition to its outstanding visual content. Shira Buchsbaum, Poetry Editor, notes that although it is an enormous honor to be recognized, she is “not at all surprised that the quality of the magazine is this high given the talent and dedication of all [members] involved.”

This dedication will be on display April 25^th, the date of the next coffeehouse, where Madison High School students, many of them Glyphs members and frequent submitters, will gather to read and perform. The Glyphs magazine will be available for purchase at the last coffeehouse of the year in late May or early June.
