Dorothy Lee, a junior at MHS and Harding alum, is pursuing her Gold Award for Girl Scouts by bringing Girls on the Run to Harding Township schools. Dorothy was the third of her sisters to graduate from Harding schools and has a younger sister, Vivian, who is currently in eighth grade at Harding Middle School. “I wanted to give back to my former middle school before the Lee legacy is finished,” Dorothy remarked.
The non-profit organization the she is working with, Girls on the Run, helps young girls grow stronger both physically and emotionally by training to run a 5k (or 3.1 miles) together. The program not only has workouts to help the girls accomplish their end goal of running a 5k, but also has fun activities that will teach participants life lessons. Financial aid is even offered to girls who need it in order to enable them to participate in the program.
Dorothy’s program will be aimed at students from sixth to eighth grade. “I want the middle school girls to know that it is okay to be themselves and to not be influenced by peer pressure,” she reasoned. She believes that it will be a great bonding experience for the girls and will help prepare them for the future.
Dorothy is working with Harding Township School’s guidance counselor Mrs. Thony along with MHS’s very own students Emily Fritze and Katie Brundage to make this program possible. They are still looking for a final coach who must be over eighteen and willing to volunteer Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. The program will be 10 weeks long lasting from March to June. She would like anyone interested in becoming a coach or participant to contact her at [email protected] so she can achieve her Gold Award after over 12 years serving as a Girl Scout.

Good work Libby and good work Dorothy! This article is a great example of a subject most students wish the Dodger would focus on.
