For all baseball fans out there who didn’t know, there are still two teams in New York and one is attempting to make a splash. The New York Mets have dished out two “massive contracts” (in their minds) The Mets signed Curtis Granderson to a four year, $60 million contract and Bartolo Colon to a two year, $20 million contract. Colon just so happens to be 40 years old and Granderson didn’t even play for half of the 2013 season, but these two players can still have a big impact on the Mets.
Granderson adds a power bat to a team that has been lacking power for a very long time. The “Grandy Man” will be a joining an outfield cast of Juan Lagres, Chris Young, and Eric Young. If all of these men live up to their potential, the Mets could have a very strong outfield. Granderson sat out for most of the 2013 season, but when he played he still had a big impact, hopefully this talent can cross over from the Bronx to Queens. If Granderson can duplicate his years of 2012 and 2011 where he hit for 84 home runs, he can help the Mets become a playoff team.
Colon could turn out to be one of the best free agent signings this season if he duplicates what he did last year. Colon was 18-6 with a 2.65 ERA and truly shut people down with his fast ball. He finished in contention for the 2013 American League Cy Young Award and helped the A’s make the playoffs. Bartolo is 40 years old and many have questioned about his arm life, but many say Colon has a “rubber arm” and can pitch for along time. The Mets gave Colon a two-year contract to fill the empty roster for the injured Matt Harvey.
The Mets are a very young team and hope to make the playoffs for many years to come. Hopefully, with the addition of these two veterans the Mets can be a playoff contender and maybe, just maybe bring a championship to Queens.
