On Friday night, over sixty MHS students came out to witness the talent that their school has at the Glyphs Coffee House. The event was a casual way for artists to perform in a low-key setting. “The audience is always really welcoming and supportive,” Kyle Smith, a member of Gyphs who has attended previous coffee houses said. Because of this, many students can showcase their talents that may not otherwise do so. They did everything from perform a musical act or recite original works or their favorite pieces by other authors. There was an open mic at the end of the night in which anyone could come up and perform. The tables were covered in black paper so audience members could draw with chalk while watching performances. Did I mention that food was provided?
It was a very enjoyable night with various students performing. The musical acts of the night included Will Wraith singing and playing “Dreaming With a Broken Heart” by John Mayer, Abby Riley and Jay Oh, Emma Yost and Whitney Xu singing “Valerie” by Whitney Houston, Grace Van Cleef also sang, along with many others. Shira Buchsbaum recited her favorite poem “If I Should Have a Daughter” by Sarah Kay and Audrey Rowland recited “Another Reason Why I Don’t Own a Shotgun” by Billy Collins. Sanja D. brought down the house with her dramatic yet comedic reading of Miley Cyrus’s “Wreacking Ball”. Everyone there greatly enjoyed Aaron French’s reading of a detention slip note he had gotten earlier that day.
Will Wraith has played at Glyphs previously and enjoys it greatly. “I love performing. Its one of my favorite things to do and I don’t get to do it that often,” he says. He likes how it gives him a chance to get more experience while performing with little pressure.
This was Glyphs’ second coffee house of the year. In addition to allowing students to show their talents, it also raises money to produce the MHS literary magazine. Anyone can submit works to the club and at the end of the year the best pieces are compiled into their magazine. They also have also has a website called www.glyphsmhs.com where they put up featured works and photos.
