On Saturday, October 19th, the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers faced off in an intense game American League Championship. Much was at stake for the Red Sox, as a win would guarantee their inclusion in the World Series.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Red Sox third baseman Xander Bogaerts scored a run on Jacoby Ellsbury’s single. Detroit quickly retaliated by scoring 2 runs in the 6th inning as Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera crossed home with a single by Victor Martinez.
In the 7th inning, however, Boston overtook the Tigers with a game-winning grand slam by Shane Victorino. Fans were on the edge of their seats as the ball soared into the air, landing in fair territory over the Green Monster. This grand slam was a relief after Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia’s potential three-run homer in the third inning just missed landing fair.
However, Pedroia made up for this in the sixth inning when he executed a spectacular double play, tagging Victor Martinez on his way to second base, then throwing the ball without hesitation to catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to tag Prince Fielder for the second out.
Koji Uehara, who won Most Valuable Player for the ALCS, ended the game with a strikeout of Jose Iglesias, thus putting the Red Sox in the 2013 World Series with a final record of 4 games won and 2 games lost.
Legions of Red Sox fans are looking forward to seeing the team’s performance in the World Series. In the meantime, fans are showing their support with team apparel and plenty of Boston spirit. In recognition of many Red Sox players’ voluminous beards, many fans wore fake beards during both the game and the next day. Our very own Ms. Papa, a die-hard Red Sox fan, was seen sporting a Red Sox sweatshirt in school on Monday. Go Red Sox!

Watching and game 1,2,3,4,5,and 6 were incredible. I’m a baseball phanatic! Playing baseball is in my blood since i was young. Playing it all four seasons. I can’t seem to stop. Xander Bogaerts base hit gave the Red Sox the momentum they needed. As soon as I saw the ball bounce off the bat of Shane Victorino I knew that Boston would take it all the way. As a reslut, Boston is leading 3-2 against St. Louis in the World Series. As for the play Dustin Pedroia made, tagging Victor Martinez then throwing it home to Saltalamacchia then threw it to Middlebrooks who tagged out Prince at third. This also sparked the Red Sox dominace. In my opinion, Koji Uehara is the MVP not because he has a cool name but he posted a 1.79 era with 7 saves in the postseason which makes him a dominant force in the Boston bullpen.
