Miriam Carey, a new mom, was killed yesterday following a short police chase at the country’s capitol, after she rammed her car into a barricade outside the White House.
The news headlines on Thursday, October 1st were a flurry of conflicting reports, ranging from breaking news on a shot police officer to a shooting at the White House. In the past 24 hours, clearer details have provided the nation with more information regarding a tragic story that starts somewhere in Stamford, CT.
Miriam Carey was suffering from post-partum depression after the birth of her daughter, according to her mother. Carey’s neighbors attest that she was behaving “erratically” leading up to her death.
Her sister, Amy, could not give any insight as to why Miriam would’ve gone to D.C., and no evidence has linked Carey to anti-government sentiments.
The events have raised questions over when it’s acceptable to shoot someone who seems to pose a threat to the President or the people inside the White House. A Secret Service spokesperson said simply, “Our officers acted appropriately.”
Carey’s child was in the backseat of the car, but was unharmed. Two police officers were injured, one as the barricade was hit and the other in the chase that ensued.
