And the streak continues! The Madison Dodgers have done it again by beating Dover 31-26. Unfortunately, it was not an easy win, but it was a win nevertheless. Fan Chloe Schorr said, “my heart rate was up way above a healthy level from start to finish of that game.” Two players are out for some time now, due to injuries obtained on the field.
Senior captain Jaywon Brown was down in the first quarter with a high ankle sprain, and is now wearing a brace, with hopes of being back in the game within the next couple of weeks. The game heart-stopper was when sophomore Jojo Mobeley was hit by Dover’s star player, George Scalley. Jojo was down, and not moving for some time. Senior Patrick Zimmerman watched the hit from just a couple feet away, and said “I saw him go stiff as a board, his eyes rolled back in his head, I’ve never been so scared I thought he was paralyzed.” Trainers and paramedics quickly came out on field to stabilize Jojo and take him to the Morristown hospital. Later that night Jojo was able to go home, with a concussion, and will hopefully be back as well in a few weeks.
All injuries aside, it was a suspenseful game. Dover started out with the ball, and within the first 3 plays they scored. The Dodgers responded fast, with a long drive capped by a touchdown run by junior David Luttinger. In no time, the Dodger’s were up by 9-7, when Dover got 2 consecutive touchdowns bringing the score to 20-9. On the ensuing kickoff senior Darnell Golson returned it for a touchdown, but was called back due to a block. On the drive that followed, junior AJ Schmitz rushed for a touchdown bringing the score to 20-17 at halftime. The third quarter was where Jojo got hurt, and no touchdowns were scored. The last quarter was where the Dodgers brought it home. Early on in the last quarter Luttinger rushed for another touchdown, bringing the Dodgers ahead 24-20. With about 2 minutes and 30 seconds on the clock, Dover scored, but Madison blocked the extra point, bringing us back to Dover 26 Madison 24. With a minute and 30 seconds on the clock, Schmitz threw the 47-yard game-winning touchdown to senior Christian Scarpello. On Dover’s drive senior Darnell St. Germain intercepted a pass, but it got called back due to pass interference. Madison held Dover and the last pass as time fell incomplete as time expired. The Dodger’s went crazy, both the players and fans, and erupted into cheer, and the streak continued.
This past Saturday, September 21st the Dodgers played their first home game of the season versus Parsippany at one pm. The team invited back old Dodger alumni from the class of ’78-’81 to support the players, and watch as they broke that classes’ 38 game-winning streak. The Dodgers beat Parsippany with ease in a 41-13 win, while also creating Dodger history.
