While the majority of Madison high schoolers were probably sleeping in on the morning of May 24, students who participate in band, chorus, and orchestra embarked on a journey to New York City. Excitement filled the air as students arrived to school, with instruments in their hands and smiles on their faces. Music students not only had the opportunity to explore the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, but were also fortunate enough to play their music on the ship itself. The museum showcases a series of aircraft carriers and warships, which set an appropriate and patriotic mood just before Memorial Day. Among many appreciative students was sophomore Jessica Schuszler. “I really enjoyed exploring the museum,” she explained. Schuszler, also a soloist, described herself as both “nervous” and “excited” to sing on the ship. A few parents who work in the city even made special efforts to watch their children perform. Supportive parents were not the only ones who were proud of the performers. Choir director Caryn Elefante said of the trip: “All of our music ensembles sounded amazing and it was such a thrill to perform on the Intrepid. One of the museum staff members said to me, ‘I hear a lot of school groups perform here and you guys are definitely one of the best!’”
After the performances were finished, students headed to Rockefeller Center to explore the Top of the Rock observation deck. Although weather conditions were hardly ideal, the rain did not stop Madison students from having fun. The observation deck allowed students to enjoy a breathtaking view of New York City, and many took pictures together to remember the day’s experiences.
Students then went out to eat at Buca di Beppo, an Italian restaurant. After a long day of walking and waiting, the musicians were able to unwind and converse at the dinner table. Later on, all individuals headed to the Majestic Theater to see the longest running show on Broadway, The Phantom of the Opera. Many students reacted positively to the performance. “I can finally understand why this show is so legendary on Broadway…It was absolutely amazing!” exclaimed senior band member, Lainie Rowland. It was nearly midnight by the time students finally arrived back to Madison High School, but the trip proved to be successful and well worth it in the end.
