A ten-year-long nightmare ended on Monday, May 6th, when Michelle Knight, Gina DeJesus, Amanda Berry and her daughter were rescued from their captors at a neighborhood house in Cleveland, Ohio. Many of the details are unclear, but police are reporting that Berry, 27, her daughter, 6, DeJesus, 23, and Knight, 32, were released from a house with the help of a neighbor after being held captive for almost a decade. All three women were kidnapped on the same street, Loraine Street, between the years 2002-2004.
Three brothers have been arrested for the kidnappings, Ariel, Pedro, and Onil Castro. All three are in their 50s, and neighbors claim they suspected nothing bizarre about their behavior. However, only Ariel Castro has been charged with any crimes, because investigators could not find evidence against the other two brothers. Charles Ramsey, the neighbor who helped Berry knock down the door, said of Ariel Castro, “I barbeque with that guy.”
Further reports indicate that Ariel Castro helped Berry’s family pass out flyers when their daughter went missing. Perhaps more shockingly, reports surfacing claim that Castro brought Berry’s daughter, who he fathered, to his mother’s house on the weekends. Apparently, she called the woman “grandma.” Additionally, the source claims Berry homeschooled her daughter inside the house.
This is surely just the beginning of a long road to recovery for the girls as more details emerge.
