The Glyphs Coffeehouse is back! For $5, students can attend the event on Saturday, April 20, from 7:30 PM-9:30 PM at the Madison Public Library Chase Room. The winner of the Glyphs Poetry Contest will also be announced, and receive a gift card.
This Coffeehouse, however, will not be the same as the one in January. This time, there will be no musical performances. Instead, students will be reading poems, short stories, and essays. The first hour of the night will feature scheduled performers, while the second hour is open mic. Students are encouraged to bring print-outs of poems to either read themselves or let others read.
Senior Grace Johnson-DeBaufre says that she is excited that there will be an all-literature coffeehouse, because while the music is fun, this will be an opportunity for people to experience literature and broaden their horizons. “People listen to music all the time, but not many people choose to listen to poetry.”
The literature theme is also appropriate for National Poetry Month. The website www.poets.org features ways to celebrate, and has a wide collection of poems that students can print out and read at the Coffeehouse. Other places to find poems are at www.poetryfoundation.org and www.poems.com.
