It’s that time of year again! Birds are chirping and the sun is shining through partly cloudy skies, melting last week’s snow. And with spring comes Spirit Week, which occurred just last week. It began on Monday, March 18th. The usual enthusiastic voice during morning announcements encouraged the student body to “show their school spirit” and participate in Spirit Week. It was pleasantly surprising when some students actually heeded the advice, and participated in the events.
Monday, conveniently, was “Pajama Day.” Many teachers participated, wearing flannel pants and t-shirts. Nick Haboj strutted his stuff in the hallways, sporting a bathrobe; and many students wore sweats, although it’s hard to tell if they were doing it for the spirit day or because of “Mondayitis.” Twin day took place on Tuesday, calling all self-proclaimed look-alikes to put on their matching North Face jackets and brave the cold weather in Hunter rain boots. Some took a more creative route; Jarred Parrett and Michael Lebwohl (pictured) wore jean overalls and furry boots. Wednesday was “Dress for Success.” Who knew Madison High School had such handsome young men? Students donned their suits, button down shirts, dresses and skirts for the day. Thursday was “Brooke Healey Day,” everyone wore either his or her Brooke t-shirts or gray and white. Friday was “Class Clash.” Freshmen wore white, sophomores wore maroon, juniors wore gold, and seniors wore black.
This year’s Spirit Week was the most enthusiastic I’ve seen in my four years at MHS. It was the first year I, myself, partook in. Maybe it was the dull weather that made students want to add a little spice to their lives, or the fact that “Brooke Healey Day” made the week a little more meaningful. Either way, it smells like school spirit, Madison, keep it up!
