In a world where there’s an app for almost everything and where social networking is a main source of communication, a major industry is being formed by combining the two. Everyone who has a Smartphone, and most people who don’t, are well aware of the websites that have become top apps through the development of social media. Instagram, another social networking app that allows you to post pictures with filters and captions, was made specifically as an app and not first as a website. Vine, owned by Twitter, is following in the footsteps of the big social networking apps.
Vine is like both Twitter and Instagram in that you choose who you follow, and you get followers back. Most people liken it to Instagram, just with videos instead of pictures. The stop motion animation app was created last July, but debuted under Twitter in January of this year.
It was early March when the Vine craze hit the high school. Within five days of its introduction to the school upwards of one hundred students downloaded and started using the app, and the number grows daily. Students have quickly taken a liking to the app. Senior Kayla Fennelly says that in many aspects it is better than Twitter or Instagram because it “allows people to be more creative.” With Vine, people can post funny videos, stop motion gifs, a demonstration of a recipe, or much more. According to junior Mia Raho, it’s better than Instagram because, “you can see an entire event instead of just a picture of it, like with a proposal.” Students must agree with this reasoning because, to many, it has become the preferred form of social media.
