The physical education teachers were surprised when the introduction of badminton to the curriculum created a craze that gripped the school. In mid December the nets were set up and classes began to rotate the six badminton courts. Each day, students impatiently awaited their gym period to try to become king of the court or challenge Lynott to an intense game. Even though badminton is no longer the sport being played during gym classes, the nets are still consistently put up.
After classes began to play badminton, the physical education teachers saw so much interest in the sport that Coach Lynott decided to create a club devoted to playing the game. Every Thursday Lynott has invited students to come take part in an ongoing badminton tournament. He created a ladder for everyone involved. The ladder ranks every player based on the outcomes of the games they have previously played. You can advance on the ladder by challenging the player in the slot one above or two above you. The current standings have Coach Kubik in the first place slot, followed closely by Coach Lynott and Coach Calabrese. These games don’t need to take place just during the Thursday lunch slot. If you are a part of the ladder, you can challenge those above you and set a time for any day after lunch or school.
To many, the once a week games weren’t enough. Several students have approached Coach Lynott asking to play every day at lunch, not just the set Thursdays. He was more than happy to accommodate. Badminton nets are set up daily during lunch for students interested in playing. The interest in the sport continues to grow and the ladder continues to expand. If you’re interested in joining, see Coach Lynott!
