Every Friday for the first six weeks of winter, five coach buses roll into the high school parking lot, picking up three hundred kids from all different age groups and schools to transport them to an enjoyable night of skiing and snowboarding. However, this could all change sooner than we think. The future of the Madison ski trip is rocky. The Madison Recreation Department, who has been endorsing ski club since its start, wants to stop funding the trip. The reason behind their sudden wish to withdraw is unknown, but Mr. Nuñez, the Madison High School Ski Club supervisor, suspects it is because the rec department is not profiting from the trip.
What is most surprising is the speed at which the rec department is trying to get out of its obligations to Friday ski trip. The January 11th trip was cancelled, not because of weather as most thought, but because of the battle happening within the administration. The Madison Rec Department is so set on getting rid of the weekly ski trip that they wanted to cancel it for the rest of the season and reimburse everyone right away.
While the future of the Friday night trips is uncertain, we do know what is happening to the annual Vermont trip. The Madison Rec Department refuses to endorse the big trip, so it has been cut from the schedule. There has been an outcry, especially from seniors who were looking forward to the last Vermont trip of their high school careers. Unfortunately, with the Madison Rec Department and Madison High School refusing to endorse the trip, there is nothing Mr. Nuñez can do to bring it back. This year, Madison High School students will be absent from Stowe Mountain, the place where they have been going for the past six years. When the last weekend of February rolls around, there will be 44 disappointed students stuck in Madison, wishing they were in Vermont.
