I went to see Django Unchained on Sunday with literally no idea what it was about, except that it is directed by Quentin Tarantino so it must be pretty gruesome. The movie was absolutely amazing; in fact it was one of the most unique films I’ve ever had the opportunity to see. The film takes place in 1858 (two years before the Civil War), in the active slave states of Texas and Tennessee. Django is freed by the bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz. The two join forces to take down more wanted men, and more importantly free Django’s wife Broomhilda. The movie’s cast was flawless and full of talent. Jamie Foxx stars as the freed- slave Django (The “D” is silent) who is a gutsy and determined African- American who fits the role perfectly. Foxx keeps the three hour-long movie full of action and humor. Christoph Waltz stars as Dr. Schultz, who helps Django on his mission to save his wife. Foxx and Waltz are a perfect dynamic for the film, their characters are complete opposites; a once- slave and a German doctor/ bounty hunter; Django’s fearless and bold character goes hand in hand with Waltz’s slightly sarcastic and brilliant personality.
Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the wealthy yet insane plantation owner Calvin Candie, who owns Broomhilda (Kerry Washington). Samuel L. Jackson stars as the overly- loyal head butler to Candie.
Django Unchained does an excellent job at making a Western film into a perfect balance of humor, action, and drama. Tarantino does a phenomenal job at creating a movie with an underdog hero.
Even though the movie is a full 180 minutes, it doesn’t slow down for a second. The film is rated R for violence and language, and there is quite a bit of blood and gore throughout the film. Since the movie has to do with slavery, very dark treatment towards African- Americans is shown, but it stays relevant to the plot. I would recommend the movie to anyone, even if Westerns aren’t your thing, this movie will surely impress anyone. When the movie ends you will surely be a Django lover.
