Mr. Robert Chandler died on July 12, 2012 at the age of 67, after battling pancreatic cancer for many years. He worked as a gym and health teacher for over 30 years, and was a very loved teacher and staff member. As a varsity soccer coach, he led Madison to two state championships. In addition to being a varsity soccer coach, Chandler also coached varsity baseball and basketball, winning one sectional championship in baseball, and qualified multiple times for the state tournament in basketball.
Weeks before he died, Madison High School hosted the Chandler Cup. The Chandler Cup was a fundraising soccer tournament to raise money for Chandler and others fighting cancer. Each teams was consisted of six players who paid $30 to compete.
The entire town of Madison was shocked by his death. Many of the students found out through Facebook, where statuses mourning his death flooded news feeds.
“I really felt like crying, and actually, when I first heard he died, I thought about attending his funeral or something in respect to him,” says junior Michael Brill. “He was eccentric, crude, but very wise in his own right.”
His funeral was held July 17, at Saint Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills. His passing saddened even those who did not know him. He influenced the lives of anyone who had the privilege to know him. “I knew him for basically all the eight years I’ve been here. I don’t think any words could do justice to Chandler. He was such an amazing and unique character.” Says Coach Lynott. Chandler was a wise man who said what he wanted, even though swearing is not encouraged at MHS. He was respected by all as a man who taught his students how to be tough, and realize if someone wants to do something, whether it is a career or even just passing a test, it takes hard work.
“Sorry means nothing!” was one statement that could be heard throughout the hallways and gym when Chandler walked through. That statement will stick in the hallways of MHS forever. “The last time I saw him, I told him I loved him. That was my way of saying goodbye.” Said Coach Lynott. “His death left a big hole in this school. I miss him every day. Freshmen will miss out on an amazing experience.” Mr. Chandler was a much loved teacher and person, whose memory will always stay in Madison High School, and Madison, and will never be forgotten.
